Beginners Guide to Getting Stoned... I mean Stones! (Sodalite)

So what is Sodalite?

If you guessed a diet drink, you would be wrong!

Sodalite Ring
Sodalite is a blue tectosilicate material. With a Mohs hardness of 5.5-6 it's definitely not considered diet, but it is thought to be very pretty!

This royal blue mineral with white calcite streaks forms in alkaline igneous rocks that can be found in the United States, Canada, Nambia, Brazil, Greenland, Russia and Afghanistan--to name a few places.

Although Sodalite is a very pretty stone (Did I mention it was pretty?), this shiny-ite has some solid metaphysical properties.

Often called the Thinker's Stone, Sodalite is believed help connect the rational mind with the spiritual self through fostering mental balance, logical thinking and intuition. It's commonly used to enhance self-esteem, truth and communication, particularly for promoting clear thought.

Tree of Life Pendant

Associated with the Third Eye and Throat Chakras, Sodalite can be used to aid spiritual exploration and the ability to speak one's truth--None of which strike me as very diet-y.

But despite all of it's powerful and not so diet attributes, it is a beautiful stone and looks absolutely stunning in many settings--like rings and pendants, which can be worn to promote emotional harmony and ward off stress.

However you decide to use Sodalite, don't eat it!

Not only is it a mineral containing sodium, aluminum, silicon, oxygen and chlorine--making it potentially harmful to digest--but the stone contains no nutritional value! The metaphysical practice of using Sodalite in crystal healing does not include consuming it. No matter how "lite" it may seen, this stone is intended for decorative and ornamental use only!

That being said, I do invite you to explore all the non-diet options Sodalite has to offer.

Beginners Guide to Getting Stoned... I mean Stones! (Blue Kyanite)

Rough Blue Kyanite

Known for its bladed crystals and royal blue color, Kyanite is a naturally occurring aluminum silicate material mined on the planet Kyanite, home planet of Superman...

   (Disembodied voice): Ahhh, no.

No?

(Disembodied voice): Superman is from the planet Krypton--Not Kyanite.

Oh. So where is Kyanite from?

Rough Black Kyanite
(Disembodied voice): Earth, where it is commonly found in metamorphic rocks like schists and gneisses, particularly in areas that have undergone high pressure and medium to high temperatures, like the Appalachian Mountains or the Alps. Named by Abraham Gottlob Werner in 1798, this gemstone derives its name from the Greek work Kyanos, meaning blue--the color most often attributed to the stone, although it can be found in a variety of hues from blue, white-gray to green.

So how come it affects Superman?

   (Disembodied voice): It doesn't!

It doesn't take away his powers and leave him in a weakened state?

(Disembodied voice sighs): While it is considered a fairly strong stone with a Mohs hardness of 4-7, its strength doesn't cause super heros to lose their powers. However, it is believed to have certain powerful abilities.

Like what?

(Disembodied voice):In spiritual practices, it is believed to promote tranquility, balance and communication. It is also thought to align all chakras as well as foster self-expression and inner truth. It is said to facilitate meditation because it doesn't retain any negative energies and can be used for cleansing, raising energies, communication, and dreams.

Well that's pretty cool. Where can I find it?

(Disembodied voice): It is used in all sorts of products like ceramics, electronics, electrical insulators and abrasives.

How about jewelry?

Blue Kyanite Ring

(Disembodied voice): Oh yes! Kyanite can be found in all types of settings. Since it is pleochroic...

Pleo-what?

(Disembodied voice rolls disembodied eyes): Pleochroic. It means that the color will change depending on which direction it is viewed. This quality makes it quite desirable for use in jewelry.

Cool... but how do you know all this stuff?

(Disembodied voice): Because I am the voice of crystal reason, keeper of the...

Who?

Blue Kyanite Ring
   (Disembodied voice): Never mind.
