Beginners Guide to Getting Stoned... I mean Stones! (Sunstone)

Not to be confused with the mysterious sunstone of Viking legend—now believed by many scientists to have been calcite crystals used for navigation—Sunstone is a beautiful feldspar mineral known for its shimmering, sparkling appearance created by copper or hematite inclusions (a phenomenon called aventurescence).

Although it isn’t considered a navigation tool, that doesn’t diminish the beauty or energetic qualities attributed to this crystal gemstone, which has many traits that make it special.

Sunstone Obelisk
A member of the triclinic crystal system—where all three unit cell axes differ in length and meet at non-right angles, forming the least symmetrical crystal structure—Sunstone can be found in Norway, Madagascar, India, Russia, and the United States. In Oregon, where it is especially well-known, Native American legend says that the stones were formed from the blood droplets of a great warrior struck by an arrow.

Adding to its allure, Sunstone is considered the Yang half of the Yin–Yang duality, associated with universal life-force energy centered on expansion, action, forward momentum, and linear qualities. It is often worn to promote a positive outlook, strengthen self-esteem, and enhance the ability to savor the moment.

Fortunately, its Mohs hardness of 6–6.5 makes it durable enough for everyday use and wear!

Ranging in color from orange and red to brown, yellow, and even green, Sunstone is also associated with warmth and the energy of the sun. It’s a favorite among those seeking to boost optimism, joy, personal power, creativity, and vitality—working in harmony with the solar plexus and sacral chakras to clear and energize.
