Beginners Guide to Getting Stoned... I mean Stones! (Fluorite)

Most dentists will recommend fluorite to help strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities. It does this by reversing early tooth decay and remineralizing tooth enamel. Fluorite can be found in toothpaste, mouthwash, and is often applied directly to the teeth during a dental exam. It's a powerful mineral used to promote health and well being.

Disembodied voice: What is this, a dental ad? 🦷

No, not at all. I was just introducing this month's featured shinyite--Fluorite!

Tumbled Rainbow Fluorite

Disembodied voice: Very pretty, but I think you're confusing fluorite with fluoride. Fluoride is a compound derived from the element fluorine. Fluorite is a mineral composed of calcium fluoride--a pretty gemstone that comes in many colors! Varieties include blue, green, yellow, purple, watermelon and rainbow fluorite, to name a few. Derived from the latin name fluo, meaning flow, fluorite belongs to the group known as calcium fluoride. Fluorite is the origin for the mineral name for "fluorescence" and it's use as a flux in industrial processes.

Umm...right, that's what I meant. (Hastily does Google Search) Got it now. All clear.

Disembodied voice: Oh yeah? So Where can it be found?

In a lot of things! This mineral is used in the manufacture of glass, ceramics, and steel. Its properties are often leveraged to make items like batteries or lenses for cameras and microscopes. (Writer puffs up proudly)

Disembodied voice rolls eyes: I meant where in the world does it come from.

Oh... Well, fluorite is often found in hydrothermal veins associated with lead and zinc ores, as well as in cavities of sedimentary rocks and igneous pegmatites, which are located all around the globe. Rated 4 on the Mohs hardness scale, it is on the softer side of the mineral spectrum, but it packs a powerful punch.

                         Disembodied voice: How so?

Fluorite Palmstone

Spiritual properties include protection, mental clarity, and spiritual awareness. Fluorite is considered a great stone to shield against negative energy and promote a sense of balance. In meditation it is believed to help with spiritual growth and manifestation by encouraging individuals to dream big and set clear intentions for what they hope to achieve. Often favored by healers, fluorite is used in Chakra healings and aura cleansing. Different colors are believed to have specific effects--purple is often used to promote intuition and green for healing and harmony.

Disembodied voice: That's impressive. Impressive and pretty.

Fluorite ring
Indeed it is! Which is why jewelers and artists alike use this gemstone in their creations. Fluorite can be found in everything from rings, bracelets and pendants to sculptures and household items.

Disembodied voice: Sounds like a must have gemstone. Where can I get some Fluorite?
