Everyone knows that gemstones come in many colors--but when you think of Obsidian, you think of black, right? I know I do. It makes sense, since that is the most common color variety. But obsidian actually forms in a surprising range of colors?

That's right! There is more to this gemstone than a Mohs hardness of 5-6.
Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass subject to chemical impurities such as iron, hematite, and feldspar which when combined with tiny gas bubbles can alter absorption and reflection, resulting in a multitude of colors and visual effects!

One well-known variety is Snowflake Obsidian, often associated with balance and purity. It is believed to aid in recognizing as well as releasing harmful patterns and negative thinking and is often used to foster inner peace.
Then there is Mahogany Obsidian. This variant, featuring red and brown, is thought to strengthen the aura to promote self acceptance, grounding, and release self-limiting beliefs.

Yellow Obsidian is considered a high-vibration stone, symbolizing joy, personal empowerment, and mental clarity. As part of the solar plexus chakra, it is believed to act as a shield against negativity while encouraging spiritual growth and confidence.

Silver Sheen Obsidian, on the other hand, is connected to the energy of the moon and is thought to enhance intuition, patience, and self-reflection.
If your seeking abundance, personal growth, and maybe a little bit of luck, you want to consider obtaining some Green Obsidian. This variety of the gemstone is cherished for several attributes including protection, grounding, peace, health, money, and a sense of freedom.

| White Obsidian (Opalite) Hearts |
Other forms of this gemstone includes Opalite (White Obsidian) which can be used for protection, communication, joy, peace, meditation, and cleansing--as well as Apache Tears (Smoky or Translucent Obsidian), used for luck, money, and ancestor magic as well as protection.
Still, my favorite variety of obsidian is the classic Black Obsidian. It is widely regarded as the premier stone for protection, grounding, and clearing negative energy.
